We welcome you to join us in creating excitement for the advancement of child rights in BC
Join us for an evening of discussion and strategic planning toward a common goal: to empower our children with knowledge and understanding of their rights and complimentary responsibilities.
Welcoming our Keynote speakers: Dr. Katherine Covell and Dr. Brian Howe, co-founders and directors of the Children’s Rights Centre at Cape Breton University.
Dr Howe is a professor of political science who specializes in human rights and children’s rights policy.
Dr Covell is a developmental psychologist who specializes in the developmental implications of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Together, Drs Howe and Covell have initiated and evaluated the effects of teaching children about their Convention rights in rights-respecting schools. They have numerous published articles and book chapters on children’s rights and four books on children’s rights.
Their talk will focus on the nature of children’s rights education and its effects on teachers and their students.
Drawing on five years of research with children and teachers in Hampshire, England, they will provide examples of the powerful effect of rights-respecting schools, especially on disadvantaged children
