ABOUT THE PROGRAMME: DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD
June 16th of every year, we celebrate the day of the African Child where children are been celebrated as the future of Africa.
In 1976, thousands of black school children in Soweto, South Africa, took to the Street to Protest the inferior quality of their education and demanded their right to be taught in their own Language. During this protest, hundreds of young boys and girls were shot, and within two weeks of the protest, more than One hundred (100) people were killed and over 1,000 were injured.
This landmark event was a demonstration of great courage and conviction by the children of South Africa, who stood up for what they believed. It is a powerful reminder of the decisive role that children can have in bringing about change and of the importance of ensuring a quality basic education for all.
The African Child day had become a Can’t do without, every 16th of June to honor the Memory of those killed and the courage of all those who made the day a remarkable one since 1991 when it was first initiated by the organization of African Unity.
The day also draws attentions to the lives of African Children today.
