Two Days Consultation on Child Labour: Issues and Strategy

Event Details

Event Description

Dear friends,

Child labour is an undesirable practice which persists in various forms all over the globe. An estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 are engaged in child labour - one in six children in the world. They are engaged in hazardous situations or conditions, such as working in mines, working with chemicals and pesticides in agriculture or working with dangerous machinery. They are everywhere but invisible, toiling as domestic servants in homes, labouring behind the walls of workshops and hidden from view in plantations.

Based on the recommendations of Gurupadaswamy Committee, the Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act was enacted in 1986. The Act prohibits employment of children in certain specified hazardous occupations and processes and regulates the working conditions in others.  Subsequently a National Policy on Child Labour was formulated in 1987. The Policy seeks to adopt a gradual & sequential approach with a focus on rehabilitation of children working in hazardous occupations & processes in the first instance.
